Layout Director | Graphics Team

The layout director is the head of the graphics team. They lay out the content for the written and ancillary sections of the publication and work with the editing team to ensure all written content is properly displayed. We also expect the layout director to communicate with the director team and preside over the final PDF of the magazine, along with a few other smaller duties. The layout director should have a keen eye for design and knowledge of current trends. They will work closely with the arts director to design and maintain the visual aesthetic of the publication. Throughout their tenure, they will gain valuable experience and insight into the publishing industry and process.

Responsibilities

  • Laying out the written sections and ancillary content of the publication

  • Communicating with the editing team to ensure that all written content is properly displayed

  • Acting as a liaison to the director team 

  • Presiding over the final PDF of the magazine

  • Organizing a semiannual central board photoshoot

  • Assisting with advertisement and flier design

  • Attending and staffing Open Ceilings quarterly events

Qualifications

Required:

  • Access to and proficiency with the Adobe Suite (InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop)

  • Familiarity with principles of graphic design

  • Knowledge of design trends and principles

  • Deadline-driven work style

  • Innovative problem-solving

Recommended:

  • Academic or professional design experience (i.e., DES 14 and DES 115)

  • Familiarity with Google Suite
