Arts Director | Graphics Team

The arts director is responsible for the visual aesthetic of the publication. They design our art and photography sections and the cover of the publication, building a consistent visual theme throughout. Additionally, they work with contributors to prepare their work for publication by acquiring high-resolution versions of their pieces, as well as accurate names, titles, and dimensions for captioning. We expect someone with an artist’s eye and a strong sense of visual appeal. The arts director will work closely with the layout director to design and maintain the aesthetic of the publication. They will also assist the publicity team in designing advertisements and fliers as needed. Throughout their tenure, they will gain valuable experience and insight into the publishing industry and process.

Responsibilities

  • Laying out the visual sections of the publication

  • Building and maintaining a visual theme for the publication

  • Communicating with contributors to confirm the names, titles, and dimensions of their pieces, along with soliciting (as needed) higher resolution versions of their work

  • Cooperatively selecting a visual piece to display on our cover, as well as designing the cover

  • Assisting with advertisement and flier design

  • Attending and staffing Open Ceilings quarterly events

Qualifications

Required:

  • Access to and proficiency with the Adobe Suite (InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop)

  • Familiarity with principles of graphic design

  • Knowledge of design trends and principles

  • Deadline-driven work style

  • Innovative problem-solving

Recommended:

  • Academic or professional design experience (i.e., DES 14 and DES 115)

  • Familiarity with Google Suite
